Things to do on the Southeast Shore
The southeast shore runs from Diamond Head to Hanauma Bay, about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Waikiki. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is the draw for snorkeling, but it is closed Monday and Tuesday and requires an online reservation, opened 48 hours ahead at 7am, with entry around 25 USD for non-residents.
Koko Head is the other reason to come: a former military tramway turned stair climb, roughly 1,000 uneven railroad-tie steps with no shade, rated strenuous rather than a casual walk.
There is no lodging along this stretch, so both stops work as a half-day trip from Waikiki or Honolulu rather than a place to stay overnight.
